These are the foundations for portrait lighting, and any photographer can create variations to enhance individual portraits from these techniques. Rembrandt Lighting This lighting technique is named after the seventeenth century Dutch painter Rembrandt Van Rijn, who used this dramatic effect for his portraits.

To understand how to use multiple sources for effectively lighting a setup or scene, the photographer must understand contrast and brightness as they apply to the lights, subject, and scene. They all work together to produce a successful image. Earlier in this chapter, contrast was discussed as it applied to lighting the object (the white object) and the shadows created from two different types of light sources. The difference between the brightest area (that area receiving the most light) and shadow area of any scene (that area receiving the least light) is called the lighting ratio.

In his example, a tent was created to eliminate stray light to demonstrate the effects of backlighting, and diffused light was used for the flat lighting. A wonderful aspect of photography is that the principles of light and lighting never change. Photography styles and technology may change. The manner in which the image is captured and subsequently presented may change. The photographer may need to adjust the lighting intensity or arrangement or to compensate for different media, such as film versus digital, but the principles of light and its relationship to objects remain the same.
